New artist hired at Inkfreak

Justin Wainner, 33, works on a Celtic four-leaf clover tattoo for a customer at InkFreak in Somerset. Although he joined the InkFreak team on Sept. 2, he has 10 years of experience in the industry.

Justin Wainner, 33, has joined the InkFreak team at 103 Main St. in Somerset as their newest tattoo artist.

Wainner recently moved back to Stillwater, Minn. after living and working in Michigan.

With 10 years of experience in the industry, he said he was living in Minnesota when Jinx, the owner of InkFreak, approached him about being a guest artist at the studio.

He said he was so impressed with the studio that when he learned they were looking for a permanent artist, he immediately applied.

As a custom tattoo artist, he said he particularly likes the traditional tattooing, sailor-style.

"I really like the Americana styles, from the 1930s and 40s," Wainner said, as he worked on a Celtic four-leaf clover design on a customer's shoulder.

Wainner is now the second artist at the studio; Jinx (who goes by one name) also tattoos. She said they are still trying to find an experienced piercer to complete the team.

Wainner said that he feels comfortable with InkFreak's philosophy of doing custom art rather than just displaying drawings on the wall to copy.

"I really prefer to do something original and different - whether it's my own design or something the customer brings in," he said. "Nothing is better than original art."
