Show organizers lift spirits to menu priority

A new beer is being premiered as part of this year's St. Croix Art & Culinary Show.

Brady's Brewhouse in downtown New Richmond is one of this year's new culinary and spirits participants.

Not only will the chef from Brady's serve up a tasty pork sandwich for attendees, the restaurant will also be pouring samples of a new brew.

A freshly brewed chocolate porter, with chipotle pepper added to the recipe, will be a highlight for the Sunday, April 10, gathering at R&D Banquet Center in rural New Richmond.

"You get a sweet and heat taste all in one," said Chris Polfus, owner of Brady's Brewhouse. "I'm excited about it."

After the premier at the show, the new beer (which has yet to be named) will be available for purchase at Brady's.

Polfus, who has attended the local event over the first five years of its existence, said he jumped at the chance to participate after opening his downtown establishment last year.

"I think it's a great event," Polfus said. "It's a chance for us to promote our food, and it's a great opportunity for our beer to shine."

The beer won't be the only local spirit on the menu.

Paul Werni, owner of 45th Parallel Spirits, will also be serving vodka and gin from his local distillery.

"We're the only business in Wisconsin that is all the way from the grain to the glass," Werni said of his complete distillery process.

Werni has been a part of the St. Croix Art and Culinary Show for four years.

"Our business is part of this community and we want to participate in things like this," he said. "Plus it's good exposure for us."

The Chateau St. Croix winery from St. Croix Falls will be on hand to hand out samples of its fine wines.

According to Jo Wrich, one of the key organizers for the event, the Art & Culinary Show is not only an entertaining evening for attendees, it gives local artists and culinary experts a chance to network and get to know each other.

"It's all about connecting people," she said. "And we're able to focus on our local restaurants, businesses and artists. We try hard to keep it local."

Among the artists participating this year are Mia Anez, Cheryl Boetcher, Taryn Boetcher, Connie Burch, Genie Castro, Gail Dalzell, Marsie Danielson, Sarah Dudgeon, Lauren Edwards, Karla Faith, Michael Farrell, Bridget Foust, David Ralph Johnson, Allie Ness, Nate Peterson, Robin Robinson, Signe Shores and Rhonda Zontelli.

Culinary participants are Bellarietta Bistro, Brady's Brewhouse, The Cake Lady, Champs, Family Fresh Market, Joseph's Family Restaurant, Parkside Restaurant and Bar, Ready Randy's, Star Prairie Trout Farm and Veronica Foods Company.

The Art & Culinary Show runs from 5 to 8 p.m. April 10. This year's theme is "Spring is the time to refresh your senses."

Tickets are $40 in advance, or $45 at the door. Tickets will ne available at The Deerfield, The SPACE and Ready Randy's beginning on March 3. Between 250 and 300 people typically attend the annual show.

Money raised through the event helps fund the STRIVE Scholarship program, which helps provide post-secondary grants to students who have boosted their grade point average in their final year of high school. The event also benefits other programs of the Rotary Club of New Richmond, which sponsored the Art and Culinary Show.

Wrich said the show's success is partly due to the great business sponsors who agree to be part of the event.

"We're pleased with the increased support we're getting from our sponsors," she said.
