Former deputy starts up BBQ biz
When Steve Lewis retired as a St. Croix County Sheriff's deputy last year, he sought a new line of work to stay busy and make some additional cash.
As the new regional dealer for Meadow Creek barbecue grilling equipment, Lewis has stepped out of the line of fire and into the fire.
"I've been really impressed," Lewis said of his new venture. "People can't believe the quality."
The grills, smokers and pig roasters are manufactured in the Amish country of New Holland, Penn. The materials used (durable metal and stainless steel) ensure that the products will last for many years. Models range in price from $725 up to several thousand dollars.
"They're not cheap, but they're going to outlast your big box store brands," Lewis said.
Lewis sells the Meadow Creek line of products to individuals, bars, restaurants, caterers and more.
"Everyone from backyard enthusiasts to big grilling competition people," he noted.
If a customer doesn't see a model that fits their specific needs, Meadow Creek will create custom grills or trailers to satisfy an order, Lewis said.
Since starting up his business, Lewis said he's sold units to customers as far away as Oregon and Montana.
"I'm the farthest west dealer for Meadow Creek," he said. "It's a lot of Internet sales."
Lewis said people can order a unit at www.stcroixbarbecue.com and he will ship them anywhere. He admits the shipping cost can be expensive, but customers still buy the units because of the quality of the products.
"Every time I get one of them in as a demo model, it goes out the door," Lewis said. "So I don't keep a lot of them on hand."
Lewis has set up a few displays at local events, such as Doyle's Farm and Home customer appreciation day, to show off the grills and smokers. Many of those stopping by have been equally impressed with the units, he said.
Lewis said he'll be planning an open house soon to celebrate the start of his new business. Watch for further details.
