For the third year in a row, Showcase Roberts will bring together Roberts businesses and community members to foster a sense of community and help support the small businesses in Roberts.
“I really like the fact that this event gives businesses the chance to meet different people and that it gives people the chance to learn about local businesses, which will hopefully lead to more support for those small businesses,” said Lisa Christensen, owner of ASIL Design. “A lot of people don’t realize that Roberts has a Main Street, but this event can really help the small businesses open up and help people realize that there is a lot that Roberts can offer.”
The event takes place Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Croix Central Elementary School in Roberts.
“The public is welcome and encouraged to come to the event to help support their local businesses,” Christensen said. “Everyone will get a punch card when they visit which, when they get it punched at 10 different businesses, will allow them to be entered into a raffle for door prizes.”
The showcase got its start when Christensen and other members of a committee in Roberts saw how successful a similar event in Hammond was becoming.
“We thought that if something like this can be done in Hammond, why can’t we do something like it in Roberts,” Christensen said. “So, I got some friends of mine who also own businesses in Roberts to start the event three years ago. We have tried to keep the focus on Roberts businesses and gaining support for those businesses within the community.”
The show featured around 50 vendors, businesses and organizations last year, which is the number Christensen hopes the third annual event can reach as well.
“It is a nonprofit event where we are trying to connect community businesses with the people of the community,” Christensen said. “We will have everything from home-based businesses to restaurants to local organizations, like the 4-H of Roberts. It is a straight vendor showcase without any demos or anything like that.”
The Baldwin Area Medical Center will offer free health screenings from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in conjunction with the showcase. Anyone interested in the free screenings must preregister at www.healthybaldwin.org. Screenings include total cholesteral, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, blood glucose, height, weight, BMI, and blood pressure. For more information, contact the Baldwin Area Medical Center.
“Basically, people can come in the morning to get a free screening, then stay for the showcase to make a day of it,” Christensen said. “It is nice to see all the people come to check out the event and help support their local businesses. The whole idea of the event is to open up the community and try to create a way for the businesses in Roberts to grow.”
