Christmas dinner to be held at United Methodist Church

Around noon on Christmas Day, the United Methodist Church (209 East Second Street) in New Richmond will throw open its doors -- as it has every year since 1994 -- to welcome the community to its annual Christmas Dinner. Dinner will be served at noon at no cost to anyone in the community.

Each year since high school sophomore Liz Brooks first saw the need for a community Christmas Dinner, the New Richmond High School National Honor Society, New Richmond High School Key Club, and United Methodist Church Community Outreach Committee have teamed up to make it happen.

Using the United Methodist Church as the staging ground, these groups combine their efforts to provide a festive holiday environment available for everyone in the community -- again, for free. Everyone is welcome at the Christmas Dinner. Just last year, more than 70 people attended the event; about that many meals were also delivered to people unable to get to the church.

A favorite event for those who have attended, this offers not just a delicious meal but conversation and background holiday music. Attendees come for a variety of reasons. Some come because they are alone, some come because they can’t afford a meal like this, some come for the friendships they have formed over the years at the event, some come just to get out of their own homes, and some come to celebrate. All are welcome.

To highlight what this means for the community, high school volunteer Victoria Johnson said that through this dinner, “Christmas turns into a day based on others.” Through the years of helping deliver meals with her family, she has formed a number of memories involving people just “sitting down and talking.” Overall, it’s clear from Johnson’s experience and the experiences of other volunteers and participants that our community is fortunate to have this.
