Heartland Days committee names grand marshal posthumously

Ron Boumeester

The Hammond Heartland Days committee selected Julie Boumeester to honor her late husband, Ron Boumeester, by being the 2017 Heartland Days grand marshal and ride in the Sunday, Aug. 13 parade, which starts at 12:30 p.m.

"Ron was a great part of the Hammond community. He was always willing to lend a hand; whether it was spraying weeds for someone or trimming their trees, he rarely said no," said Heartland Days Committee representative Linda Hawkins.

"Ron worked as a lineman for St. Croix Electric for 36 years. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond, a past charter member of the Hammond Lions Club for many years, a charter member of the Hammond Golf Club, and also worked with Habitat for Humanity building houses. Ron was passionate about the game of golf and enjoyed time with family and friends at the cabin on Bone Lake that he and Julie owned for many years."

Ron and Julie were married for 55 years when Ron passed in November 2011. Ron has two daughters, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

"I was shocked to find out Ron was being honored as grand marshal. While this is an honor and I am very much appreciative, I know Ron would want all the hardworking members of the Lions remembered as well," Julie said. "Ron was a man who sometimes worked behind the scenes, wanting no attention or applause."

Ron was a lifelong resident of Hammond and was one of the original chartered members of the Lions Club in Oct. 22, 1982.

"He's been gone six years now, so it has been hard," Julie said. "He was a chartered member of the Hammond Golf Club and he was involved with Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed being a part of the Lions and during Heartland Days, the Lions worked long and hard hours as they still do now."

Julie is looking forward to being in the parade with two of her great-grandsons.

"Ron always said Hammond is the best place to live and raise a family," Julie said. "Thank you Hammond Lions for this honor in his memory."
