4-time drunk driver gets just 12 years in motorcyclist death

A man who drank 10 beers before killing a motorcyclist in a hit and run crash will spend 12 years in prison.

Daniel Johnson, 38, was sentenced Monday in Waukesha County after he pleaded no contest to a charge of hit and run causing death.

The crash occurred June 15 in the town of Lisbon. It killed 42-year-old Daniel Kelsey of Hubertus.

Authorities say Johnson left his pick-up truck and the victim behind the following the crash, and ran to a wooded area where he spent the night before calling an attorney.

Johnson, who was convicted four previous times for drunk driving, claimed he didn't know what he hit

However, Judge Ralph Ramirez said Kelsey's motorcycle was about an arm's length from the truck and the body was close by. The judge said Johnson cooperated with authorities when confronted, and it kept him from serving a longer term.
