45th Parallel adds to spirits product line
45th Parallel Distillery in New Richmond has released a new product to the spirits market.
"Border Straight Bourbon" whiskey was unveiled at a special ceremony Sunday, Aug. 26, at the distillery's facilities in the New Richmond Business and Technical Park, 1570 Madison Avenue.
Visitors were given the opportunity to taste and purchase small batch whiskey while having access to the distillers and the distillery.
Border Straight Bourbon is truly small batch in every detail, according 45th Parallel founder and owner Paul Werni. The Border name is from the fact that two of the distillers working at the local facility are from Minnesota and other two are from Wisconsin.
"Three of the distillers cross the Minnesota and Wisconsin border every day to produce this bourbon," Werni said.
Border Straight Bourbon is artisan distilled from grains provided by a sixth generation family farm, minutes from the distillery.
"No short cuts," Werni said. "We practice traditional aging techniques in medium char, Ozark White Oak barrels constructed from wood staves that are air dried three years."
He said the distillery does no blending.
"Only whiskey from our grain and distilled in our pot is put in bottles that carry our name," he explained.
Only four distillers work and create products in this facility. The distillery started making vodka in 2007, added gin in early 2009 and began aging whiskey at the end of 2009.
Currently 45th Parallel has a hundred barrels of bourbon and rye aging.
