Alzheimer's Walk seeks volunteers, teams
Teams and volunteers are needed for this year’s St. Croix/Pierce County “Walk to End Alzheimer's” set for Saturday, Sept. 20, in New Richmond. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at The Deerfield, 1127 West 8th St.
Early registration is encouraged online at www.alz.org/walk where you will find details and can monitor progress of fundraising.
The walk committee has been hard at work making plans welcoming new team captains, team members and day-of volunteers. Honorary chairperson of this year’s even is Lori Loney of River Falls.
More than 350 people participated last year and more than $33,000 was raised; this year’s goal is $40,760. So far 15 teams and 43 walkers have signed up.
The Alzheimer's Association provides programs and services free to any family affected by Alzheimer's disease. A 24-hour helpline is available any time at
800-272-3900 for anyone needing answers to questions.
There are support groups to help families learn and stay connected. It also offers early, mid- and late-stage education to families and also provides training to professional caregivers.
The Alzheimer's Association is the world's largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's research.
One in every three seniors dies with Alzheimer's or another dementia. Deaths from
Alzheimer's disease increased 68 percent between 2000 and 2010, while deaths from diseases such as heart disease, prostate cancer and breast cancer declined. Dementia is the second largest contributor to death among older Americans, second only to heart failure.
