Up and down Spartans beat Durand, nearly beat NR

The Somerset softball team may now realize its potential.

That's what the Spartan coaches are hoping after the Somerset girls took the undefeated New Richmond team into extra innings on Monday night. The Spartans also beat Durand during the past week, but lost to Unity and Prescott.

Monday's game was a showcase for the Spartans' possibilities. The top of the order continues to mash the ball. Kendra Steinlicht homered for the first Somerset run. Erin Dodor tripled and Mariah Belisle doubled as the Spartans rallied from a 7-1 deficit in the sixth and seventh innings. "We needed a game like that," Somerset coach Jane Driscoll said. "Even though we lost, our girls need to know how much potential we have. And this shows it."

The Spartans played solidly on defense and Kaitlin Johnson's pitching was always around the plate. New Richmond scored five runs in the second inning. A key to that inning was a disputed play at the plate, where the Spartan coaches thought Dodor had cleanly tagged the Tiger baserunner, but the umpire ruled that she did not have control of the ball. If that play had been called an out, the Tigers would only have scored two runs that inning.

Belisle showed her toughness in the game. She was struck in the face in the third inning, but came back to produce the hit that tied the game in the seventh.

Another game that showed the Spartans' potential was last Thursday's 5-3 win at Durand. All the scoring in this game was done in the first three inning. From there on, Johnson did some of the most dominating pitching of her career. In the last four innings of the game, Johnson allowed one baserunner, including retiring the final 10 batters she faced in the game. She finished the game with a two-hitter, striking out seven.

The Spartans had built the 5-3 lead by scoring single runs in the first and second innings, before putting up three runs in the third. Katie Lindner led off the third with a walk and was bunted to second by Steinlicht. Dodor then walked and the runners moved up on stolen bases. Belisle then chased both of those runners home with a single. Belisle later scored on Roxy Martin's single.

As well as the Spartans played on Thursday, that's how badly they played at Unity on Friday. The Spartans fell behind 10-1 in the first two innings to a team that they thrashed early in the season. They did comeback somewhat, but it was far too late in an 11-6 loss.

"I think we let up a little because it was a non-conference game," Driscoll said in trying to explain the subpar effort at Unity.

Dodor had a homer, double and single in the game at Unity and Belisle and Steinlicht each doubled.

Last Tuesday the Spartans played at Prescott and gave another of the top MBC teams a battle. Again the Spartans fell behind early, 6-2. They came back to make it a game, losing 11-7.

Dodor and Katie Potting each produced three hits in the game, including another homer by Dodor who has to rank among the top extra-base hitters in the area this season. Belisle and Martin each had two hits in the game.

This will be another busy week for the Spartans. On Thursday they play at Ellsworth and they play in a tournament at Glenwood City on Friday. On Monday the Spartans will play at home against Baldwin-Woodville, and the Spartans are back on the road next Tuesday, playing at Amery.
