Another up-and-down week for the St. Croix Central volleyball team included the resignation of co-coach Julia Foley.

Laura Lee will continue to coach the Panthers through the end of the season.

The regular season is complete for the Panthers, with the WIAA Division 2 tournaments ahead of them. The seeding for the tournament bracket is scheduled to be done this Wednesday. The Panthers will likely draw one of the bottom seeds in the regional bracket. That would give them a likely destination of either New Richmond, Osceola or Baldwin-Woodville for their opening tournament match next Tuesday.

The upside for the Panthers last week came on Tuesday when they played at Colfax. The Panthers battled gamely against the Dunn-St. Croix Conference co-leaders before losing 25-16, 25-12, 25-19.

“The girls on the court had a flow and played very well. It was the smoothest we have played all season since pre-season,” Lee said. “We lost but still felt like it was a step forward.”

Madison Malecek and Brianna Danielson combined for 12 kills to lead the Panthers’ play at the net. Malecek also recorded eight solo blocks.

Sadie Buckel played well in several areas. She was the Panthers’ most accurate server, being on target with all 12 of her attempts. She also led the team with nine digs.

The downside of the week came when the Panthers played at home against Elk Mound. The Panthers’ play faded through the match, losing 25-16, 25-5, 25-9.

“We were very apprehensive and unsure of everything. We did not play to our potential,” Lee said.

The Panthers were only able to generate four hit kills during the three games. One of the few highlights was Malecek’s blocking, as she recorded 11 solo blocks. Ayla Granberg and Rachel Larson had the best success rates among the Panthers who were on serve receive duty in the match.
