Arctic Terrier Trials coming to Somerset campground
The Apple River Family Campground is hosting the Arctic Blast Terrier Trials on Saturday, Sept. 10, and Sunday, Sept. 11.
The two-day event features racing, obedience, lure coursing, go-to-ground and a simulated barn hunt. Sandy Brown will be the judge for Saturday; Liz Valles will judge on Sunday.
"We have been doing this for about 15 years," said Brenda Buckles, chairperson of the event. Previous trials had been in Burkhardt and Glenwood City.
The Terrier Trials are a nationally recognized event for Jack Russell Terriers and other working terriers in the five-state area, though some participants come from as far as Texas and Canada.
The event is open to the public, but Buckles said that to show in the "sanctioned" event, the dog owners must be a Jack Russell Terrier Club of America (JRTCA) member and dogs must be registered or recorded. Non-sanctioned events are also available for anyone to participate regardless of membership.
"We're hoping this new location in Somerset will be home to our trials and fun days in the future," she said.
