Badger state gets high mark for biking
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

Wisconsin is a great place to ride a bike.

The League of American Bicyclists rates the Badger State as the second most bike-friendly state in the country.

Washington is No. 1.

League president Andy Clarke says Wisconsin has well-marked bicycle trails, and maps which make them easy to find.

Jack Hirt of the state's Bicycle Federation says riders can enjoy a vast network of paved back roads, which get fewer than 500 cars a day.

To win the nation's top ranking, Hirt says road planners would have to adopt a program that requires special bike lanes as part of every project.

Hirt also says it would help if Milwaukee County had trails that connect urban trails to rural streets.

He said transit buses also need to get bike racks.
