Badgers end ties with running back Smith
University of Wisconsin running back Lance Smith was dismissed from the team Monday.
That's after the 20-year-old junior violated the terms of his first-offender program. Had he stayed clean, Smith could have had his convictions for battery and disorderly conduct dropped in December.
Instead, he'll be sentenced a week from Thursday on those convictions, which stemmed from an attack on his girlfriend last year.
Badgers' Head Coach Bret Bielema said he has had discussions with Smith and his high school football coach in Warren, Ohio and they're working with him on several opportunities to play elsewhere.
Smith wants to transfer to a Football Championship Sub-division school, the former Division 1AA, where he can play this year.
Meanwhile, it's Day-Two of the Badgers' pre-season camp. All of the injured from last fall and this spring took part in yesterday's practice.
Junior corner Josh Nettles is expected to miss camp due to academic problems.
Freshman offensive lineman Chris Garner of Augusta was not at practice either, after deciding not to enroll at Madison. Bielema said it was due to family decisions.
