Balsam Lake man dies due to injuries in Saturday rollover
Donald VanGundy, 28 of Balsam Lake, died early Saturday morning due to injuries sustained in a one vehicle accident.
Andrew Arnold, 29 of Emerald, was also injured in the accident. He is in critical but stable condition. His CaringBridge site said he sustained several injuries, including fractured legs, pelvis and spine as well as a complete break in his lower spine and bruised kidneys.
According to a press release from the Polk County Sheriff's department, on Oct. 18 at 2:40 a.m., the Sheriff's office was notified of a one vehicle crash on State Highway 65 at the intersection with U.S. Highway 8.
Balsam Lake Fire Department, Unity Ambulance Service and Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene. In addition, air ambulances from North Memorial Hospital and Life Link III from Regions Hospital were dispatched.
Once on the scene, the Sheriff's department determined that a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass 2 door was northbound on State Highway 65 when it lost control and left the highway. The vehicle crossed over to the opposite shoulder, struck a mailbox and began to roll several times.
While the vehicle was rolling, driver VanGundy and passenger Arnold were ejected. Both were transported to the St. Croix Falls Medical Center where VanGundy was declared deceased. Arnold was then transported to Regions Hospital by North Memorial Ambulance.
Preliminary indications are that alcohol, speed and lack of seatbelt use are contributing factors in the accident.
This is the 10th Polk County traffic fatality of 2008. It remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's department.
