Band Boosters award scholarships
The St. Croix Central Band Boosters announced four recipients of music scholarships to attend a summer music camp or other performance experience at the SCC High School band concert in Baldwin-Woodville Tuesday, March 18.
All active choir and band students are eligible to submit a scholarship application. The students completed a short essay on the camp and why they want to attend, submitted a letter of recommendation from a teacher or community leader and the endorsement from one of their music teachers.
A selection committee then reviewed and awarded the scholarships. All funds are made available through the generous donations of community members, families and friends at the end of each band and choir concert. A $125 scholarship was presented to the following four students.
@t:Vasser will attend camp at Northland Youth Music Program in Duluth, Minn. They offer both concert band and jazz band experiences. Lexi is currently in 10th grade and plays many instruments, including bass guitar in the jazz ensemble and flute in the symphonic band. She has participated in honors band and solo and ensemble contests. She is the flute section leader. “This scholarship will challenge me with more difficult music in a different setting and give me insight on how to improve my performance ability,” Vasser said.
Bachtell will attend the Jazz Ensemble camp at Shell Lake Arts Center in Shell Lake. She is in ninth grade. She plays clarinet in concert band and jazz ensemble and sing in the choir. She also plays violin and piano and is pursuing learning guitar and saxophone. Bachtell said she wants to attend camp to learn more about jazz history and jazz music, including rhythms, tempos and performance techniques.
Budrow will attend Broadway Bound at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. This camp immerses the students in all aspects of musical theater including training in singing, dancing and acting. Budrow is in ninth grade and participates in both choir as a soprano and in band in the percussion section.
“I want to pursue acting and performing,” Budrow said. “Broadway Bound would be a wonderful opportunity for me to gain more understanding of performing arts, do what I love and bring back what I learn to SCC.”
Clark will attend the Middle School concert band camp at the Shell Lake Performing Arts Center in Shell Lake. She is in sixth grade and plays clarinet in band, as well as the piano. Clark said she wants to attend camp to learn as much as she can about her instrument and become a well-rounded musician.
