BBQ bash to raise money for NRFD
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

Barbecuing is, for the most part, a summer activity, but that is not stopping the Boardman Bypass and owner Mary Glieden from putting on a BBQ Bash on Saturday, Feb. 22, to help raise money for the New Richmond Fire Department.

“The winters are long here and anyone can barbecue in the summer when it is easier to do and warmer,” Glieden said. “Every year we try to do something to help raise money for a local organization and this year we just happened to pick the New Richmond Fire Department.”

The barbecuing starts at 6 a.m. with a check-in while judging starts at 1 p.m. Competitors may only cook chicken or ribs and must supply enough samples for all five judges, who will rank their top four teams to decide the winner. Up to 15 teams will compete in the competition.

“This is the first year we’ve done a barbecue thing, but it should be a lot of fun for everyone involved,” said Boardman Bypass manager Erin Ofstedal. “It is also a good way to bring in customers and to eat some good food.”

Along with the barbecue contest, visitors will get the chance to enjoy sleigh rides from 1-4 p.m. and also listen to music throughout the day.

“We tried to find a thing for families to do and get out of the house for and I think everyone will have a good time at the BBQ Bash,” Glieden said. “We’ve been trying to get the word out every way we can, be it with posters around town and the area or on Facebook.”

Glieden and her staff took about two months to plan the bash, according to Ofstedal. Leading up to the competition, Glieden and her staff will be busy getting everything ready to go for Saturday, including setting up the barbecue areas and getting things ready for the sleigh rides.

“We have a lot to do to get ready for the contest, including plowing the snow and a lot of other things,” Glieden said. “We are hoping to raise a good amount of money to donate to the fire department, and hopefully a lot of people will show up to help us out with that.”

The BBQ Bash also features a raffle, which starts at 1 p.m., and a grand prize to be awarded at 3 p.m. (the winner must be present to claim the prize). Donations will be accepted throughout the event and all the money raised at the event will be donated to the New Richmond Fire Department.
