Bernard M. Matthys, 85
Bernard M. "Bennie" Matthys age 85 of Star Prairie died on May 12, 2009.
He was born the son of Albert and Laura (Anderson) Matthys on June 28, 1923 in Barron, Wis. Bennie graduated from the New Richmond High School with the class of 1942. He served his country in the Army during World War II from 1943-1946 receiving the Bronze Star. Bennie owned and operated a Sporting Goods Store "Bennie's Bait" in Star Prairie. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #187, and American Legion Post 80, the Lions Club and the Boy Scouts. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and master gardener.
Bennie is preceded in death by his parents; first wife Irene Matthys; and brother, Wesley Matthys.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle Matthys, sons Craig Matthys and wife, Shelly of Star Prairie and Kirby Matthys and wife, Linda of North Pole, Alaska; stepsons Greg Wickenhauser and wife, Gretchen Stein of Osceola, Steve Wickenhauser and wife, Christy of New Richmond, and James Wickenhauser and wife, Brenda of New Richmond; stepdaughters Lori Bergstrom and husband Bruce of Adams, Minn. and Kim McGregor and husband, Mark of New Richmond; 23 grandchildren; sisters, Mae Rennick of Star Prairie and Lorraine Folsom of Westminster, Calif.; sister-in-law, Marilyn Matthys of Star Prairie; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and good friends.
A memorial service for Bennie was held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Star Prairie with Pastor Amy Hessel officiating. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion followed by the Masonic Funeral Rite. Arrangements are with Beebe Mortuary of New Richmond.
