Blackman has successful opening round match

Shane Blackman tries to roll over Kaukauna's Bailey Von Handel in their prelim match at the state meet.

MADIDSON - New Richmond's Shane Blackman had a successful first-round match at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament Thursday afternoon.

Blackman shutout Kaukauna's Bailey Van Handel 5-0 at 113 pounds. Blackman improves to 32-3 overall.

It was scoreless for much of the first period until Blackman scored a takedown for a 2-0 lead. He used that momentum to get three nearfall points while riding Van Handel through the second period. He then rode out Van Handel through the entire third period as well after Van Handel chose down.

Blackman's next match is a quarterfinal bout with Stoughton's Collin Krause, who won his first match by a 6-2 decision over Eddie Smith of Sauk Prairie. Krause is a freshman with a 45-6 record.
