MADISON - New Richmond's Shane Blackman has advanced to the semifinals in Division 1 at 126 pounds at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament.

Blackman defeated Taylor Choinski (36-7) of Racine J.I. Case in the preliminaries 4-2. Blackman was in control ahead 2-0 until he gave up a reversal in the second period which tied the score. But Blackman scored a reversal at the start of the third period and held on to win 4-2.

Blackman got out of another jam in the quarterfinals against Bay Port's Chase Farr (42-1).  Blackman was ahead 7-3 but nearly got caught by a fireman's carry into a takedown and potential nearfall situation. But he escaped from it and scored a takedown and went on to win 9-5. Blackman improves to 29-2 overall.

"I really didn't know where I was in all honestly," Blackman said after the match. "At that point I just shutdown and let instinct take over and used my scrambling ability to get the takedown."

Blackman will wrestle Kaukauna's Kolton Jansen (41-7) in the semifinals Friday starting at 7 p.m.

New Richmond wrestler Derek Dowd (34-8) lost his prelim match to Sauk Prairie's Austin Fjoser (35-5) 12-5. Dowd scored a late reversal with five seconds left in the match but Fjoser was well control, scoring most of his point in the second period. However, Dowd is not out of the tournament yet. He will wrestle Evan Hietpas (37-9) of Kaukauna in the consolation round Friday morning.
