Blackman a point short in semifinals
MADISON - They certainly thought it was a pin.
New Richmond's coaches certainly thought prep wrestler Shane Blackman pinned his semifinal opponent, Kolton Jansen of Kaukauna, at the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament Friday evening.
That's because time ran out on Blackman after executing a brilliant five-point throw which brought him to the brink of victory and the Division 1 finals at 126 pounds. But it was not to be.
Jansen survived for a one-point win, 15-14 in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament.
Blackman, 29-3 overall simply would not quit despite trailing Jansen (42-7) for much of the match. Every time Jansen looked to take control Blackman would counter with a reversal or get a takedown to keep the match close. Blackman was down 15-9 before his big-point throw came with less than :40 seconds left in the match.
Blackman will join teammate Derek Dowd in the placement matches. Dowd, (36-8) won twice on Friday, beating Evan Hepitas (37-11) of Kaukauna 3-2 and defeating Konnor Mohr of Elkhorn (38-8) 5-0.
Blackman will first wrestle Austin Quartullo (37-4) of Muskego while Dowd will go up against Fritz Schierl (47-3) of Stevens Point.
