Businesses show interest in running county nursing home
Representatives of seven companies potentially interested in taking over St. Croix County's nursing home attended an information meeting this month.
Health and Human Services Director Fred Johnson said only one business attended an earlier session.
All the information requested or presented at those meetings plus other information potential applicants might want has been posted at the county's Web site, said Johnson. Proposals are due Feb. 15.
In related business Tuesday, the County Board added five more members to the team that will review proposals. That team will meet in closed session at 1 p.m., Feb. 8, to discuss evaluation procedures.
These people were already part of the evaluation team: Johnson, Administrative Coordinator Chuck Whiting, Nursing Home Administrator Bill VanOfferen, Dr. Michael Kretz and supervisors Esther Wentz and Gordon Awsumb.
County Board members voted Tuesday to add to the team the other four members of the county's Finance Committee (Buck Malick, Tom Caflisch, Stan Krueger and Daryl Standafer) and Supervisor Don Jordan, who has experience in real estate development.
The people appointed to this team should be experienced at evaluating business plans, said Supervisor Chuck Struemke. He suggested supervisors with business and management backgrounds.
Others pointed out that Standafer is a banker, Krueger is an accountant, Malick is a lawyer, and Caflisch was a purchasing officer for a large company.
The county is seeking proposals from businesses interested in buying or renting the St. Croix Health Center, a 72-bed skilled nursing home in New Richmond.
Proposals may be submitted to:
Buy the St. Croix County Health Center,
Lease the nursing home with provisions to purchase, or
Enter into a partnership to build and operate a new nursing home and/or assisted living facility in New Richmond.

Proposals must be submitted to Management Systems Specialist Dana Baker by 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15.
