Sometimes a long bus trip home isn't so bad. Especially when it's after ending a long losing streak.

The St. Croix Central girls had come close to several wins recently, but they finally completed the task last Friday, winning at Pepin 59-41.

Any question on whether the Panthers would win this game was decided in the second quarter. After leading 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, the Panthers erupted for 21 points in the second quarter to lead 34-17 at halftime. The Panthers lead was more than 20 points for most of the second half. That allowed coach Shannon Berg to rest her starters for the final five minutes of the game.

Leading the charge in the second quarter was sophomore point guard Ella Olson. She dropped in four three-pointers in the quarter, part of her 13 points in the quarter. She finished the night with a game-high 21 points.

Berg said she expects this game will lead to Olson playing well for the rest of the season.

"She's been frustrated lately, she's so hard on herself because she wants to do everything right," Berg said.

The second quarter charge should be good for the confidence of the entire Central team. That's because they made the charge while leading scorer Rachel Anderson was out with foul trouble. Berg said an emphasis lately has been that every player on the team can score and that they don't have to rely on one player for their points.

Senior guard Megan Heinbuch led the team with five assists, most of them during the second quarter. Anderson scored 13 points and led the team with 11 rebounds. Olson and Katrina Brummer each contributed seven rebounds.

Berg said the preparation by the girls, so they were ready at the start of the game, was pivotal.

"I could tell the second the ball went up we were ready to play," Berg said. "It was nice to see our defense pick it up, that was our catalyst on offense."

Playing four strong quarters at Pepin was a pleasant sight too, because the Panthers were coming off a game where they struggled on their home court. Last Tuesday the Panthers lost to Glenwood City 69-42.

Glenwood City got up on the Panthers right away, posting a 22-9 lead in the first quarter. Berg said the Panthers were outrebounded by a wide margin in the game.

Anderson led the Panthers with 14 points, four steals and 16 rebounds against Glenwood City. Olson led the Panthers with five assists.

Berg said she hopes the momentum from the win at Pepin will result in a strong push over the rest of the season for the Panthers. Their next chance at a win will be this Thursday, when they are visited by Elk Mound's girls. The Panthers are also at home next Tuesday, against Colfax.
