Central's Malecek makes state finals
MADISON - Marcus Malecek took the sting out of a tough day for the St. Croix Central wrestling team by qualifying for the finals of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.
Malecek won his semifinal match Friday evening in overtime 3-1 over Luke Dietsche of Luxemburg-Casco at 220 pounds in Division 2.
Both wrestlers were locked in a 1-1 tied going into the extra session although SCC coaches were upset Dietsche, unlike Malecek, did not take a shot throughout the match. However, Malecek prevented any overtime win by other means by scoring an early takedown on a slide-by move.
"He almost scored on the same move earlier in the match so he went for it again and successful," SCC head coach Brad Holzer said. "Same location too, right on the edge of the mat."
After watching the other four Panther wrestlers be eliminated from the tournament during the day, head coach Holzer was very pleased Central's state tournament experience will end in the state finals.
"Certainly it takes the sting out of what happened in the afternoon," Holzer said. "But even though we lost those matches I wasn't disappointed in our kids effort. We still wrestled very well."
Malecek will face Oconto Falls senior Riley Delzer (41-1), a defending state champion looking for his second straight championship. The finals begin at 6 p.m. this evening.
