Churches offer VBS camps during summer
With summer fast approaching, many churches in the area are gearing up for their annual community outreach endeavors, specifically vacation Bible schools.
Vacation Bible Schools are a low-cost/no-cost way for parents to have their children entertained over several days while doing faith-related activities and crafts. Some churches will offer a free-will offering family meal before the activities begin, or at the end of the week.
Below is a listing of the vacation Bible schools offered in the New Richmond, Somerset, Star Prairie and Roberts areas, in order of occurrence as of press time.
Immaculate Conception, at 151 S. Washington Ave. in New Richmond, is offering a VBS Monday, June 14, -Friday, June 18, from 1-3:30 p.m. The VBS is appropriate for kids from 4 years through third grade. There is a fee of $20 per child and registration is due by Monday, June 7. Contact the church at 715-246-4652 to get a registration form.
Roberts Congregational United Church of Christ, at 1001 Birch St. in Roberts, is offering "Following Jesus" VBS starting Monday, June 14, through Friday, June 18, from 6-8 p.m. The VBS is appropriate for kids from preschool to sixth grade. There is no fee and people can register for the VBS at the church that Monday, June 14. For more information, contact the church at 715-749-3225.
"Besides starting with a meal, each fun-packed lesson will include crafts, activities and special treats," said Laurene Ray, of Roberts Congregational UCC.
Prairieview Covenant Church, at 1396 210th Ave., in New Richmond is offering "In the Ewe-niversity of Jesus (The Life of David)" VBS Sunday, July 25, through Thursday, July 29, from 5:30-8:15 p.m. Registration/check-in and supper is each night at 5 p.m. The VBS is appropriate for children 4 years to sixth grade. There is no fee, but donations to offset expenses are welcome. Registrations are due by Monday, July 15.
"We offer a very hands-on type of Bible school," said Nancy King, co-pastor of Prairieview. "We will have puppets every day to present the Bible story and the present-day application, music and skits."

First Lutheran Church, at 258 N. 3rd St. in New Richmond, is offering "Heroes Headquarters" VBS starting Monday, July 26 through Friday, July 30, from 9-11:30 a.m. The VBS is appropriate for children 3 years old through fifth grade. There is a $10 fee per child; $20 fee per family. The registration deadline is Friday, July 16. Forms are available by contacting the church at 715-246-2133.
United Methodist Church, at 209 E. Second St. in New Richmond, is offering "Galactic Blast" VBS starting Sunday, Aug. 1, through Thursday, Aug. 5, from 5:15-8 p.m. (meal included). The VBS is appropriate for children 4 years old (by Sept. 1, 2010) through fifth grade. There is a $5 fee per child that includes the VBS T-shirt. The registration deadline is Thursday, July 15. Forms are available through the church's website at www.newrichmondwiumc.org or by calling the church at 715-246-2464.
According to the UMC website, "Cadets will voyage into outer space praising God and take on daily missions through a cosmic combination of faith and fun."
Cross Lutheran Church, at 1246 County Road TT in Roberts, is offering a VBS starting Sunday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 6, from 6-8 p.m. There is no fee. Contact the church at 715-749-3551 for more information.
Christ Lutheran Church, at 510 Germain St. in Somerset, is offering "Sower and the Seed - ReNew" VBS starting Monday, Aug. 2, through Thursday, Aug. 5, from 6-8 p.m. The VBS is appropriate for children in grades pre-K through sixth. There is no fee, and children may register up to the week of VBS. Contact the church at 715-247-3341for a registration form or e-mail christ email@example.com.
"Grounded in Jesus' parable of the sower, ReNew VBS brings together the Bible and environmental stewardship," the CLC release said. "Kids will grow in faith as they play, learn, sing and work toward renewing their congregations and communities. By serving in the community and inviting the community into church, kids demonstrate that being green can be faithful, and fun!"
Bethany Lutheran Church, at 415 Bridge Street in Star Prairie, is offering their "Superheroes of the Old Testament" VBS starting Monday, Aug. 9, through Friday, Aug. 13, from 9-11:30 a.m. The VBS is appropriate for children from 3-10 years old. There is no fee, and the registration deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 4. Registration can be done through the church office at 715-248-3730, or through the education director, Nancy Tritt at blcspedu@frontier net.net. The church asks that parents provide child's name, age, address, phone, grade completed, parent contact information and any allergy or medical conditions necessary.
"We have singing, outdoor games, crafts and on the last day, we have all the families come for a cookout lunch at the church around 11 a.m.," said Jennifer Struss, VBS coordinator for Bethany Lutheran.
First Baptist Church, at 341 North Shore Drive in New Richmond, is offering its circus-themed "Under God's Big Top" VBS starting Monday, Aug. 16, through Friday, Aug. 20, from 9-11:45 a.m. The VBS is appropriate for children 4 years old through fifth grade. There is no fee, and registration forms are available at the church or by calling 715-246-2700.
