City of New Richmond all a Twitter
The City of New Richmond has kicked off its new social media strategy by establishing a new Twitter account.
City Administrator and Utilities Manager Mike Darrow admits the Twitter effort is off to a slow start. There were just 26 followers of the city's Twitter feed as of Friday.
But Darrow said the city expects to follower numbers to climb as residents become aware of the new account and see the value in signing up.
"We're trying to use more social media for greater reach to the community," he said. "We want to use it as a tool to get ahold of people."
Among the expected uses for Twitter are alerts concerning power outages, information about city emergencies and specifics related to community events. Darrow, along with three or four other city employees, will be responsible for tweeting on a regular basis.
"It's a free service, and people can sign up through a link on the city's web page," Darrow said. "We encourage people to sign up."
Eventually the city hopes to reduce its use of email blasts to communicate with the public.
To begin following the city's Twitter feed, follow these simple instructions:
Step 1. Log into Twitter - at www.twitter.com.
Step 2. Search @newrichmondwi
Step 3. Press "Follow."
Step 4. Receive Twitter updates from staff at the City of New Richmond.
After the Twitter activity picks up, Darrow said the city employees will consider starting a Facebook page as well.
