Clean sweep event offered by St. Croix County
If you are looking to rid your home of hazardous materials, such as pesticides, herbicides, solvents, poisons, oil- and lead-based paints and a host of other common but potentially dangerous items, bring them to the collection on Saturday, May 15.
Household hazardous waste will be accepted from all county residents from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the County Highway Shop at 666 E. Highway 12 in Hudson. Most household hazardous waste will be accepted free of charge.
A special collection for small businesses and farmers is being held Friday, May 14. Participants are invited to set up an appointment to bring their materials, but must pre-register. A pre-registration form is required and can be found at www.co.saint-croix.wi.us. Farmers can bring up to 500 pounds of waste for free, but businesses will be charged. Contact the county recycling specialist at 715-386-4675 for farm and small business collection information.
In addition to household hazardous waste chemicals, the following items will be accepted for a fee: fluorescent lamps 4 feet and shorter, 40 cents each, 5 feet and longer, 60 cents; HID lamps, $2.20 each; car and truck oil filters, 50 cents each and tractor oil filters, $1 each.
Unacceptable items include latex paint, waste oil, auto batteries, electronics, explosives, medical or infectious wastes, radioactive materials and pressurized containers.
The county will also be hosting collections for appliances, tires and electronics at separate events in June. Go to www.co.saint-croix.wi.us for additional information on these collections or other recycling and hazardous waste questions.
