The early-season schedule for the St. Croix Central girls basketball team pits them against their main opponents for the top spots in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference.

Last Tuesday the Panthers ran up against the sharp-shooting girls from Colfax. Colfax took advantage of some Central defensive lapses to build a 31-15 halftime lead. The Panthers couldn't cut into that margin at all in the second half, losing 53-35.

This left both teams with a 1-1 record in the D-SC heading into this week.

This week the Panthers played at Boyceville Tuesday. This Friday Central will play at home against Glenwood City in the Panthers' Parents Night game. Next Tuesday the Panthers play at home at 6 p.m. against Elmwood, with the boys varsity teams playing at 7:30 p.m.

Central's girls had won their opening game of the season, but against Colfax they got away from the things that had helped them beat Elk Mound.

"Our strength is getting the ball inside for high percentage shots and we weren't doing that," said Central coach Shannon Berg.

The Panthers were a step slow on defense for much of the game. That's a cardinal sin when you face a team that shoots as well as Colfax can.

"It exposed a few of our weaknesses," Berg said. "It's a mentality, anyone can play defense if they want to get it done."

Being that moment behind on defense threw the Panthers into severe foul trouble. The Panthers had three girls foul out and finished with 26 fouls, compared to 12 fouls for Colfax.

Central was led in scoring by junior guard Ella Olson who finished with 10 points. Senior center Rachel Anderson topped the team with eight rebounds, but she was only able to get away four shots in the game. Anderson and Liz Frank each blocked three shots in the game. Dani Brown led the Panthers with four steals and Olson's four assists were tops on the team.
