It appears that most Wisconsin communities will only be able to raise their property taxes by 2 percent this fall.

That's because the economic slow-down has put a clamp on new construction.

Under state law, municipalities can only raise their total tax levies by 2 percent, unless new buildings made their tax bases grew up by more than that.

In southeast Wisconsin, only a-third of the 154 communities had construction increases above two-percent. Sturtevant in Racine County had the highest jump, at 7.2 percent and that's down slightly from the past couple years.

Sturtevant catches some of Racine's urban sprawl and it benefits by being close to Interstate 94.

Last year, municipalities could raise their taxes by just under 4 percent. That's because their state aid was delayed by a hold-up in approving the current state budget.
