Community Ed offers help for keeping resolutions

This year St. Croix Central Community Education has the resolution solution for getting and staying fit in 2011.

Residents in Hammond and Roberts can't use the excuse that there are no places to get fit around the area, because the St. Croix Central Community Education activities list is overflowing with fun ways to get healthy this year without breaking the bank.

"I believe that when you find a workout that is fun, energizing, creative and convenient, the excuses just disappear," said Fitness to Go owner Tera Busker.

Two popular classes during the 'new year, new you' time of year are the Get Fit Bootcamp and Zumba.

Get Fit Bootcamp

The Get Fit Bootcamp is a unique bootcamp style class that combines cardio, strength training and core work all in an exciting 60 minute workout.

The 10 session fitness program offers fitness instruction, nutritional counseling and motivational training -- jam packed with fun and energizing activities designed to help anyone reach their fitness goals.

Whether someone is a beginner, an avid fitness enthusiast or just tired of the same routine, everyone can join in on the fun.

Tera Buskar has been an ACE certified personal trainer since 2000 and has the right attitude and experience to help anyone meet their fitness goals.

Buskar says her bootcamp includes continuous positive encouragement -- no intimidating yelling will be going on in her class.

Individuals interested in Buskar's bootcamp should expect variety.

"Each class is different. One class we might focus on more cardiovascular exercises, another might be more strength training and yet another might throw in a fun, new way of working out like tabatas. I like to change it up so my bootcampers keep progressing and never get bored," Buskar said.

Buskar says she adjusts her bootcamp so "anyone from an avid exerciser to a newbie can do the workout. And for those who think that they are too out of shape to come to bootcamp, well, hey ... we all have to start somewhere."

Classes are every Monday night at 6:30 p.m. in the SCC Elementary School small gym, 202 Division St., Roberts. People can join anytime. Remaining classes in the winter session are: Jan. 17, 24, 31 / Feb. 7, 21, 28.

People can purchase a five-class punch card for $40 or a 10-class punch card for $70. An individual class costs $10

ZUMBA

Certified Zumba instructor Michelle Calcagno says the "Latin flavor and international zest" incorporated into each dance-fitness class helps tone and sculpt one's body while burning fat.

"We call it exercise in disguise. It is a total party! It really doesn't feel like your typical workout because you are not doing the 'traditional' actions but you are still getting the same benefits of it," Calcagno said.

Calcagno said the moves are fairly simple and easy to do, with most songs having only three or four moves in them.

"The music is fun and it helps to keep you moving. There is no pressure in the class to get it 'right' just keep your groove going," Calcagno said.

Calcagno claims a person can burn 500-1000 calories in just one hour-long class.

Classes run Jan. 19- May 7 (if school is closed -- no class), Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. at the SCC Middle School small gym, 1295 Vine St., Hammond, Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. in the SCC Elementary School Large Gym (in back, LL) 202 Division St., Roberts. People can purchase a 12 class punch card for $78; 8 class punch card for $56; 6 class punch card for $48; Drop-in for $10 a class; Students (13-18) pay half price. Ages 13-16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. (not necessarily in the class).

Community classes

Buskar says taking classes through the community education program saves people money since the community classes cost less than what most gyms charge.

Calcagno says there are also social benefits to participating in the community fitness classes.

"People benefit by getting to know others in their community through either going to classes or instructing classes. Sometimes you never know who has the same interests you do until you see them in a class," Calcagno said.
