Corn Fest slated for New Richmond this Saturday
Plans are falling into place for The Centre's second annual Corn Fest, which will take place in Glover Park this weekend.
Corn Fest, which began last year to replace Corn on the Corner, is slated for Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with a 5K race, one-mile youth run and seven-mile family bike ride (free). For those not running in the race, the festivities will start at 10 a.m.
Music will be provided by Lyle Orr, of A Noteable Event. Corn will be provided by Lakeside Foods. There is no charge for the music or corn, said Darian Blattner, executive director of The Centre.
The festival is designed to feel more like a carnival.
Face painting, giant inflatables, Pickles the Clown, water wars, a dunk tank and various carnival games will all be featured the day of the event.
The city will be closing First Street between the Civic Center and the library for safety and logistical reasons on Saturday. The street will provide a platform for five inflatable structures, four of which will scale 15 to 20 feet in the air, to be displayed for kids and adult enjoyment.
Kids' corn husking and corn eating competitions will also take place.
Those not interested in corn can peruse the concession stand, manned by the New Richmond Mom's Group. Tickets for the concessions and certain activities are $1 per ticket.
"We had over 1,000 people last year and we are hoping the weather cooperates and we see the same numbers this year," Blattner said.
Last year The Centre ran out of the 1,000 gift bags they had prepared for Corn Fest participants.
"We are going to make another 1,000 for this year and hopefully we run out again," he said.
Dogs and coolers will not be allowed into the festival area. There is a $10 pre-registration fee for the 5K or $20 if registering the day of the race. Registration for the one-mile race is $5, $10 on the day of the race. Registration fees include a T-shirt. The bike ride is free.
