DA sponsors 'stop drugs' poster contest
St. Croix County District Attorney Eric Johnson has announced that his office will again be sponsoring the 18th annual Stop Drugs Poster Contest.
The contest involves fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh graders from public and private school districts in St. Croix County.
The program involves students submitting anti-drug and alcohol posters to the District Attorney's Office where they are judged by a panel of St. Croix County citizens. The winners are awarded savings bonds, and the top posters are made into calendars, which are distributed to schools in late December.
Johnson stated that his office sponsors this program for a variety of reasons.
"Not only do I believe this is a small but important step toward encouraging children to think about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, but also because a program like this involves law enforcement in a strong, proactive way within our community," he said.
Johnson stated that the Stop Drugs Poster Contest is funded entirely through voluntary donations in the county, from both businesses and individual residents alike. He also emphasized that the response to this program over the past 17 years has been nothing short of tremendous.
"Last year we received posters from more than 1,500 children in St. Croix County," he said.
Johnson said the District Attorney's office is again asking for community assistance, by asking all businesses and local residents for financial contributions.
Donations can be sent directly to the District Attorney's Office Stop Drugs Program, 1101 Carmichael Road, Hudson, WI 54016.
