Death toll climbs in Trempealeau County fire
The death toll is now at three from Sunday's fire that destroyed a landmark apartment building in Independence in western Wisconsin.
Police Chief Derrick Vold said a third body was found Monday, as clean-up crews searched the rubble of the Independence Hotel and Tap for more victims.
Everyone has been accounted for, but the victims' names have not been released yet.
The state fire marshal's office is still trying to figure out what started the blaze, but Vold says it does not appear to be suspicious.
Six people escaped. Two had to be rescued after running from a second-floor window to a nearby roof.
Trempealeau County Sheriff Richard Anderson said a family of four was among those who got out OK.
Three of the building's occupants were members of a local Hispanic church.
Residents said the four-story structure was at least 90 years old. It was said to be a popular hotel and tavern until a few years ago.
