Deerfield plans veterans' memorial
The Deerfield senior living complex dedicated a new flag and flag pole at its New Richmond facility on Nov. 9.
The pole is now located in a new spot, near the future front entrance to the facility.
According to Administrator Jo Wrich, plans call for a veterans' memorial to take shape in the main entrance area, including benches and landscaping.
"We hope to make it a nice place to come and salute our veterans," she said.
During last Wednesday's ceremony, members from area American Legion and VFW posts were on hand for the event. Some of The Deerfield's 12 residents who are veterans were also on hand.
A short presentation was followed by a prayer, and then the flag was raised on the pole for the first time. The crowd recited the Pledge of Allegiance to close the ceremony.
Wrich told those gathered that The Deerfield is collecting donations to help make the new memorial a reality. Donations from individuals, as well as veterans and civic organization, are welcomed, she noted. A special fund has been established by the Presbyterian Homes Foundation to collect any financial contributions.
