DNR says no to Cassville power plant
A proposed coal-burning power plant in Cassville would hurt nature.
So says the draft of an environmental impact statement from the state DNR, the Public Service Commission and the Army Corps of Engineers.
Alliant Energy of Madison wants to build a 300-megawatt plant in far southwest Wisconsin to meet a growing electric demand.
The environmental study says it would hurt the bed along the Mississippi River, jeopardize rare species of mussels and wipe out 20 acres of forest land.
Alliant has proposed building at Portage as an alternative.
Officials are seeking public comments on the environmental study. Hearings are expected later in the year.
