Early a.m. accident sends three to hospital
A one-vehicle accident early Wednesday morning sent a mother and her two children to the hospital.
The first call came at about 4:19 a.m., said Polk County Field Services Lieutenant Steve Smith. The vehicle was traveling east on 35th Avenue in Polk County when it gently drifted off the road. It then hit a field access road and vaulted. The car either spun or rolled, causing extensive damage, Smith said.
Two kids, ages 1 and 4, were ejected from the vehicle. There was a size appropriate booster seat and car seat inside the vehicle for the kids, but authorities are not yet sure if they were being used properly. The driver, who is the mother of the children, was not ejected.
Initially two helicopters were called to the scene, Smith said. One child was airlifted to the Regions Hospital in St. Paul but the other was not used.
The 1-year-old has been released from the hospital. The 4-year-old and mother are still at Regions Hospital as of Wednesday afternoon.
Smith said the injuries didn't appear life threatening and hadn't heard anything contrary.
The names of the victims have not yet been released
