Eau Claire courthouse closed after Tuesday fire
The Eau Claire County Courthouse will stay closed today, to make repairs after an electrical fire.
Most of the building was evacuated just after noon Tuesday, when the power went out.
Authorities said the fire was contained to an underground electrical vault area, where black smoke erupted before the fire was put under control in about an hour.
The cause and a damage estimate were not immediately determined.
Eau Claire County Sheriff Ron Cramer said the third floor jail was not evacuated, because there was not a risk of smoke inhalation.
Smoke in a cell block resulted in seven inmates being moved within the jail.
The 911 center and the jail have been running on an emergency generator since the fire.
Three county meetings and small claims court hearings were called off Tuesday afternoon.
They'll be rescheduled, along with today's government and court proceedings.
