When Gibby's Lanes opens in New Richmond April 29, bowling enthusiasts will get a first-hand look at the changing face of the sport.

This is not your grandfather's old-fashioned bowling alley.

It's a high-energy, spacious, brightly lit building. Black lights help add a new twist to the bowling experience. Lanes, gutters, pins, tables, bowling balls and shoes all glow in the dark.

Music and flashing lights put the finishing touch on anyone's bowling trip. There's even a haze machine that creates a little fog for an added feature.

"Extreme bowling has been around for a few years, but it's new to this community," said owner Jamie Gibson.

Gibson said the family recreation center and sports bar will be devoted to providing a good time for young and old alike.

"The center has something for everybody's needs," Gibson said.

Besides the 12 bowling lanes with automatic scoring, patrons will be offered a wide selection of video gaming, and 16 televisions inside the facility will be tuned in to various sporting events. There is even a 15-foot projection TV set up in the banquet room for the really big games.

The large banquet facility is available for parties, weddings, reunions and birthdays. It will also be the site for various dances throughout the year.

"We already have 30 events booked back here," Gibson said. "We have 4,300 square feet. We can fit just about any size party."

The recreation center includes a pro shop to meet every bowler's needs for shoes, bags, balls and more. There are also 100 lockers for rent at Gibby's.

The bar and restaurant area is decorated in a northwoods theme. The tables, stools and bar are all made of logs, adding to the Gibby's experience, Gibson said.

The restaurant offers customers a full menu, including pizza.

"This is the nicest bowling facility within a 100-miles, anyplace you drive," Gibson proclaimed.

Gibby's has been under construction since November, and Gibson said he's anxious to open the doors to customers for the first time. The public appears to be anxious for the opening as well.

"On the average, we have a dozen people a day stop in and ask when we're opening," he said.

League bowlers are also showing their excitement about the new center. The Wednesday night spring men's league is already full. Other leagues are also filling up, Gibson said.

Gibby's is planning a grand opening event in late September or early October.
