Family of New Richmond man who died in jail receives $1 million settlement
The family of a northwest Wisconsin man who died in jail 26 months ago will get a million dollars to settle a wrongful death suit.
Brandon Hessler of New Richmond died at a hospital, after St. Croix County jailors in Hudson found him unresponsive in his cell.
He was arrested for breaking into his mother's house and trying to get prescription drugs.
Family attorney Steven Goff said the settlement involved what he called "alleged willful indifference" on behalf of the jail workers.
The county will pay a $0.25 million of the settlement, and its insurer will cover the rest.
