Fedie, Johnson perform well in 2008 WIAA State Golf Championships
St. Croix Central golfers Brad Fedie and Austin Johnson got a rare treat at the 2008 WIAA State Division 3 Boys Golf Championships.
Fedie and Johnson got to play their final round at the state tournament in the same foursome. The Central golfers handled themselves quite well. Fedie, a senior, finished the tournament with a score of 174. Johnson, a junior, shot a 177 at the state tournament.
Long-time Central coach Lindy Johnson has had several golfers compete at state through the years. He said there are always nerves that have to be dealt with.
"On that first hole you tee off with all kinds of people watching you. It takes everyone a couple holes to calm down," Johnson said.
Playing together helped both of the Panthers relax for their final round. Coach Johnson said that both Panthers played well for the large majority of the state tournament. There are a couple extremely difficult holes on the University Ridge course, and trouble on those holes drove up the Panthers' scores.
Including playing the practice round on Sunday, Fedie and Johnson played 54 holes in three days. Coach Johnson said both Panthers were wearing down a little under that schedule.
"We haven't played 18 holes in three days in a row all season," Coach Johnson said.
Fedie, Colin Bruesewitz and Nick Revoir are the seniors on this year's Panther team. Fedie and Bruesewitz have been in the Panther varsity lineup for all four seasons of their high school careers. Coach Johnson said he felt badly for Bruesewitz, who missed his chance at state with a rare rough outing in the sectional tournament.
"Colin's been the workhorse for us and he works so hard at his game. (The sectional) was probably the only bad round he's had in four years," Coach Johnson said.
The Panthers have also announced their team awards for the season. Fedie and Johnson shared the Most Valuable Award with Revoir named as the Most Improved Golfer.
