According to Somerset Fire/Rescue assistant fire chief Jason Crotty, the building, located at 1989 Highway 35 just north of Somerset, was a total loss.

“We were luckily able to salvage some of his welding equipment and supplies,” Crotty said. “But when we got there the shed was fully engulfed.”

Crotty said they arrived on the scene at roughly 3:10 p.m. The homeowners had called in the fire. The shed was not far from the house.

Crotty said crews were on scene fighting the fire for almost two-and-a-half hours. Somerset police officers and St. Croix County Sheriff’s deputies assisted with traffic control. The St. Croix County Highway Department was called to salt and sand the highway in front of the property due to spilled water.

Crotty said the leading cause of the fire was an outdoor wood burner used to heat the shed. No injuries were reported.

Somerset Fire/Rescue was assisted by St. Joseph Fire and First Responders, Lakeview EMS and Hudson Fire. Somerset Police was assisted by the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department and the St. Croix County Highway Department.
