New Richmond has between 200 and 250 families in need of assistance with food, clothing items, and other necessities each month.

During the summer months, the need increases even more. While on summer school break, children no longer have access to meals provided through the school system and food shelf donations typically drop during these months.

A wonderful way to provide support to these families is by donating to the local food shelf. Food shelves are in constant need of non-perishable food items, personal hygiene items including deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste and sanitary napkins, baby supplies such as diapers and wet wipes, household cleaners, and much more.

This year, employees at National Refund and Marketing Services Inc., located at 511 Wisconsin Drive in New Richmond, wanted to do something more to increase local food shelf donations during these critical summer months.

While National Refund normally holds several internal food drives each year, employees wanted to have an impact in a larger way by challenging other businesses in the Business & Technical Park to a "Business to Business Food Drive Challenge" the lasted two weeks of July.

The goal was to support the local community and have these donations assist families in need right here in New Richmond. To further encourage participation, a picnic grilling prize pack was awarded to the participating business with the largest donation as determined by weight.

Nine businesses from the park agreed to participate and in total collected 948 pounds of donations. Participants included Bear Buddies, Countryside Plumbing and Heating, Federal Foam Technologies, Isometric Tool and Design, New Richmond Dental, National Refund & Marketing Services Inc., Phillips Plastics, Simon Electric and St. Croix Press.

Federal Foam Technologies was the winning business with 332 pounds collected. All donations were brought to Five Loaves Food Shelf and Clothing Center for distribution.
