Full color football: Rainbow of youth football teams highlights Tiger Community Night
Black and Orange were on full display when the first Tiger Football Community Night was held at the New Richmond football stadium last Wednesday.
So were the colors green and blue and red and yellow.
The Community Night was an opportunity for football fans to see the present and future versions of the New Richmond Tigers football team. In addition to the more than 50 high school players, there were nearly 100 fifth and sixth grade players who took part in the event. The Community Night was coordinated by the newly formed Tiger Football Boosters.
The event was the idea of Tiger varsity coach Keith Badger, who said a similar event at Park of Cottage Grove, his previous school, was a rousing success. Badger said he hopes the event will grow larger in future years, with more youth and middle school participation.
The evening activities started with a photo session, which included a large group photo of the high school and youth teams together.
The five youth teams were then put through a practice with the high school players and coaches serving as instructors. It was difficult to tell whether the younger or older kids were enjoying this opportunity more.
The evening concluded with scrimmages of the freshman and varsity teams. Many of the younger kids stayed to watch the scrimmages, but more were busily playing a pickup football game in the grassy area along the home bleachers.
