Gayle Matthys, 79

Gayle Matthys passed away at her home in Star Prairie, Wis., Wednesday, July 23.

Gayle was born on March 25, 1935, in Sisseton, S.D. to Walter and Lillian (Olson) Barrett.

Gayle was preceded by her parents, husband, Lee; husband, Bennie, daughter, Jane; granddaughter, Tara; and brother, Gary Barrett.

She is survived by her children; Gregory (Wanda Heffron) Wickenhauser, grandchildren; Jeremiah and Michael; Steven (Cristy) Wickenhauser, grandchildren; Justin (Trish) great grandsons Chase and Bradley, Jessica (Joe) and great grandson Dawson, and Joshua; Lori (Bruce) Bergstrom, grandchildren; Joe, Jennifer (Josh) and great granddaughter Kylee; Carey (Guy), Carson, and Molly; Jim (Brenda) Wickenhauser, grandchildren; Amy, Brittany, and Megan; Kimberly (Mark) McGregor, grandchildren; Sara (Jake), Cody, and Brett; step-children; Craig (Shelly) Matthys, step-grandchildren Benjamin and Bailey; Kirby (Linda) Matthys, step-grandchildren Nathan, Evan, and Robert; and friend Larry Hatella.

Gayle was a registered nurse graduating from The College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn. She married Lee Wickenhauser in 1956, and together they raised six children on a dairy farm in Stanton Township. In 1988, Lee and Gayle moved to Star Prairie where Lee passed in 1990. Gayle then married Bernard "Bennie" Matthys in 1995, until his passing in 2009. Gayle spent much of her life after the children were grown as a dedicated registered nurse, serving at Holy Family Hospital, St. Croix Health Center, retiring from Maple Manor Health Center in 1995.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at Immaculate Conception Church in New Richmond, Wis., with a visitation held one hour prior to service at the church. Lunch to follow the service. Interment at St. Bridget's Cemetery in Stanton, Wis.
