With two indoor meets already in, the New Richmond girls track team is showing it is ready to build on last year's success.

The Tigers ran in two indoor meets at UW-River Falls, last Tuesday and Saturday. Tuesday's meet was a quad event against River Falls, Hudson and Osceola. Saturday's meet was the 14-team All-American Invite.

In the two meets the Tigers had a good mix. Many of the girls who established themselves last season showed they are ready to take another step up in their success. Add to that promising efforts from younger members of the team and you can understand why coach Brent Aukema is enthused.

One of the brightest spots of the two meets was the running of sophomore Hannah Demulling. Through her career Demulling has been bothered by severe shin pain. Over Christmas she had surgery on both legs. The result is Demulling running pain free and strongly. In Tuesday's meet she set a school indoor record in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.54.

Sophomore Ayla Mitchell set a school indoor record in each of the meets. In Tuesday's meet her time of 5:35.43 set an indoor record in the 1600. She followed that by running a 2:23.73 time in Saturday's meet to set a school record in the 800.

Junior Jessie Mitchell is doing some of the best jumping of her career this spring, going 15-11 in the long jump on Tuesday. She also went 30-5 in the triple jump.

Some of the less experienced girls look ready to be competitive in events. Bekah Sievert and Kelsie Abramson showed good potential in the 55 hurdles and the 200 meter dash.

The Tigers need someone to step up in the throwing events and several girls look ready for the challenge. Christy Cunningham had the best throw on Tuesday and Bridget Mortensen improved on her best throw of last season by eight feet.

With these times and distances in place, the Tigers now have something to build on. Their schedule allows for plenty of practice time, with nearly a two-week break between meets. The next meet for the Tigers will be on Thursday, April 10 at Osceola. If the weather doesn't allow for an outdoor meet that day, the Tigers will compete the following day at an indoor meet at UW-River Falls.
