One of two men charged in the theft of copper wire from a railroad line last summer has been sentenced to prison.

Jeffrey Michael Hawkins, 50, 1108 Rustic Rd., Glenwood City was ordered to serve one year probation, 50 hours of community service, fined $215 and ordered to pay restitution on a theft conviction related to the railroad incident.

Hawkins, however, had is probation revoked on previous charges of manufacturing THC and possession of methamphetamine from a Sept. 2003 case and was sentenced to five years, including two years in prison and three years extended service supervision.

He was convicted of the drug crimes in December 2004 and sentenced to five years probation.

Hawkins and Wade A. Larson, 31, 2658 155th Ave., Emerald, were arrested last September when deputies conducted a search warrant on Larson's property and turned up 1,900 feet of 6-gauge wire and 1,294 feet of copper-clad steel wire belonging to the Union Pacific Railroad, the criminal complaint said.

Larson was scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 30 and a jury trial was to start on May 21.
