Running in the Gold Baton indoor meet at Blaine last week gave the New Richmond and Somerset girls a better indication of where some of their strengths lie this season.

Team scores weren't kept at the meet, but both teams had several strong performances to build upon.

New Richmond coach Brent Aukema was particularly pleased with the showing of the girls he had running in the relay events. He started each relay with one of the team's most experienced runners. He then had less experienced runners taking the final three legs in each race, putting them in a position where they would be running among the leaders.

Aukema said these girls answered the challenge. He used freshman Breanna Bohmke as an example. She ran a 28.8 split in the 800 relay, helping the team to finish in second place.

The field events are beginning to shape up for the Tiger girls. Sophomore Jessie Meyers threw a personal best in the shot put. Aukema said several girls are also showing promise in the pole vault.

This was Somerset's first meet of the 2004 season.

The Spartans appear to have good balance in the running events this year, which led to them performing well in all three relays at Blaine. The distance races are again well covered, led by seniors Emily Witzmann and Whitney Langer, who both reached state last year. They joined with Amanda Plourde and Christi Schmitt to win the 3200 meter relay last Tuesday.

Witzmann was also second in the 3200 meters, with Langer taking third place.

Sophia Landry ran a personal best 1:07 in the 400 meters. Julie Markfort ran a 1:06 split in the 1600 relay.

Somerset coach Dave Praschak said the young sprinters also showed potential, with freshmen Kailey Klis and Brianna Johnson placing in the short sprints.

Both teams are now off until they start the outdoor season on April 15. New Richmond will be competing at Menomonie that day, while Somerset is scheduled to compete at Osceola that day.
