Hammond woman sentenced in fatal crash
A Hammond woman has been sentenced to jail and a lengthy period of probation on a felony conviction for homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
Ashley L. Fouks, 20, was sentenced one year in jail, 15 years probation, fined $1,023.85 and ordered to pay $11,043.86 restitution Aug. 18. A three-year prison sentence and eight years extended supervision were imposed and stayed.
The court also ordered her license revoked for four years and an ignition lock placed on her vehicle.
The criminal complaint said that at 5:58 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2007, Fouks crashed her Oldsmobile into a guard rail on Hwy. 35/64 near the County I overpass in the town of Somerset. Her car then bounced into the oncoming lane of traffic where it was hit by a pickup truck.
A passenger in Fouks car, Deno W. Owczynsky, 27, Crystal, Minn., suffered fatal injuries from the collision with the guard rail and died at the scene.
Owczynsky was the third traffic fatality in St. Croix County in 2007, a year in which 18 were killed, reversing a downward trend in fatalities over the previous few years.
