Somerset Boy Scout Troop 144 has a big goal for this year’s Pea Soup Days. It wants to fill its troop trailer to overflowing with food and donations to benefit the food shelf at Grace Place.

According to Joann Hardegger, a spokesperson for the troop, the food drive was established two years ago by Tyler Kupczak as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Hardegger said an Eagle Scout project must benefit the community, not just as a one-time thing, but have a lasting impact.

“The project must be sustaining,” Hardegger said. “This is the third year the troop is coordinating it.”

The trailer will be located in the OSI parking lot (709 Rivard St., Somerset) on Thursday, June 5, starting at 4 p.m. for the OSI/Training Room Run. For the remainder of Pea Soup Days, the trailer can be found next to the Pea Soup booth in Village Park. The Boy Scouts will cook and serve the festival staple this year.

Any donation to the food drive is appreciated, whether it’s one food item, one bag of food, one box of food or money to go toward buying gas and food gift cards.

Each donation will guarantee 50 cents off a bowl of pea soup.

All proceeds from the sale of pea soup will go to the Boy Scouts account, which helps scouts earn badges, work toward earning their Eagle Scout designation and attend outings, Hardegger said.
