A 6.54-mile stretch of Highway 35 will get a much-needed facelift, though not for a few years.

The segment of highway in question is from Lagrandeur Road in the Village of Somerset north to the Polk-St. Croix county line, according to WisDOT Northwest Region Project Supervisor Timothy Mason. The project was announced at the Somerset Village Board meeting Dec. 17.

“We currently have a resurfacing project scheduled for Highway 35 with a LET date of Sept. 12, 2017,” Mason said. “Because the LET date is during the fall of 2017, the actual construction would be expected in 2018.”

Somerset Public Works Supervisor Bob Gunther said an LET date is when the bidding begins.

“The surface area is rutting and heavily cracked,” Gunther said of that stretch of Highway 35. “Maintaining it has become impractical. Resurfacing it will be more effective than patch work. It has exceeded its surface life.”

When construction begins, no detours will take drivers on different routes.

“Traffic will be able to move back and forth,” Gunther said.

According to Mason, the general scope of the project is to mill and overlay the existing pavement. “There will also be some minor work with adding rightturn lanes, bypass lanes and paving shoulders where appropriate,” Mason said.

According to Gunther, the intersections of Laser Drive, Evergreen Drive, 205th Avenue, 210th Avenue, 220th Avenue and County Road H will be improved with the rightturn and bypass lanes.

Gunther said he was told guardrails and beam guard upgrades may be added anywhere there is a significant slope to the ditch.

The project will be finished off with new signage, Gunther said. WisDOT will fund the resurfacing project.
